Songs We Wish We Wrote

Posted at 22:20 on August 20th, 2009 by Gerard

So we hit the studio in a couple of weeks to record our new CD called 'Songs We Wish We Wrote'
And as the name suggests, its a covers album. Its been an idea I've had floating in the back of my mind for a while now and luckily Pat liked the idea when I suggested it to him!
Basically its just a fun way for us to pay tribute to the many bands who have inspired and influenced us over the years. We decided to cover mostly the lower profile Australian bands coz we don't wanna come across like we're cashing in on anyone elses success. And hopefully this way some people will get to hear some great 'rock nuggets' they might not of heard otherwise!
In between all of this we're also busy writing for our next release which will be sometime early 2010. Rest assured our new songs totally kill anything we've done before!

And to celebrate the birth of this covers CD we're gonna have a big party at the one and only Evelyn Hotel on Thursday October 22nd.
Supports will be Girl Vs Ghost, My Name For Your Name and Harlequin Heroes. Don't miss this one!
We'll also be doing a Sydney launch but more details as we have them.

Stay realish,
 - Gerard

Flying into 2009!

Posted at 17:55 on February 16th, 2009 by Patch

Hey gang!
Few things we thought we'd let ya know about.

First up, big thanks to everyone who came up to the CandyPants Xmas gigs in December. We had a blast up in Sydney as always and the Curtin gig in Melbourne was a great way to finish up what was a pretty big year for us! Big thanks to everyone that made the effort to make it down. We'd also like to thank CandyPants for being fuckin awesome as always and also big thanks to our buds Lights Out for being the best label mates eva!

Also, we think you should all go out and pick up the latest issue of Pee Zine. Not only is this the best zine in Australia but the latest issue features a nice little interview with Gerard (see below).
Gerard covers all the important topics ranging from songwriting, touring and of course the important role of bananas in the Statics' diet!
There's also a nice little review of our album in there. Here's what they had to say:

THE STATICS - S/T  (Candy Pants)   CD
Melbourne rock band The Statics has produced a corker of a debut album here. With 10 tracks clocking in at around 36 minutes, it doesn’t hang around too long but shows the potential this young band has. Opening track “Where It’s At” kicks things off nicely, while tracks such as “Any Of This” and “Lost At Sea” shows a more restrained side to The Statics. Musically, the guys will appeal to fans of Aussie groups such as Blueline Medic, Grand Fatal, Lead Sketch Union and Mere Theory. As far as highlights go, it’s hard to look past the rocking “What You Want” or the melodic “Blame”. There aren’t many weak moments on offer here but the album could have used a couple more out-and-out rockers if I was to be overly critical. Big fan of the vocals too, nothing like hearing an Aussie sing with an Aussie accent.
RATING: 82/100 | REVIEW BY: NO SHOW

We've also just uploaded a bunch of new videos on our myspace.
First up we finally have the 'Tie Me Down' film clip which has plenty of live footage and shenanigans from the road from 2008 (big thanks to Broni @ Psycho Janitor).
Next we have the new Statics episode from Psycho Janitor productions. This episode gives you an insight into our much loved bassist Mr. Pat (Patch) McKenna.
Lastly, we have some great live footage from our recent gig at the legendary Annandale Hotel in Sydney. This was shot by the good folks at MOSHCAM.
You can see all of these vids on our MySpace NOW!

And finally, we've just put together a profile on the brand-new Aussie music site nexTunes.com.au! Check us out, become our fan and all the rest here:

Keep an eye on our MySpace and we'll have a some gigs up shortly.

Track By Track + JJJ Unearthed

Posted at 13:09 on August 10th, 2008 by

HEY!!!!

So now that the album has been out for a little while, we thought we'd chuck up this little track by track thing that we feel is pretty sharp. We did it not long after the recording process and it's a good little insight into the record of the album and how the songs came about. So take a deep breath and indulge yourself in this....

Where it's at
Gez: The oldest song on the album. I wrote this song through sheer frustration of watching a terrible live band. All a band needs now is a myspace page, cheap recording software and a digital camera. Writing good songs, rehearsing and putting on a strong performance is getting pushed aside and it's a crying shame. 'Just give me five minutes up there and I'll show them where it's at'

Pat: If somebody had have said to me, "Let's put a slide guitar in this song!", I would've said, "Gay." But it's not. It's good. Coops' brilliant idea to incorporate slide guitar into this song breathed new life into it.

What You Want:
Coops: A gritty song about a sleazy night on the town. I was struck by the lyric "You want a change? We're changing every day" as soon as I heard it.

Dave: I remember listening to heaps of Midnight Oil when we wrote this song and I love that it comes through in the end product. It's a rocker!! The first song we ever put together, but still a lot of fun to play.

Any of This:
Dave: An obvious choice for the first single, the pre chorus and chorus have a great hook. I remember when Gerard bought it into rehearsal for the first time; it was spinning in my head for days.

Coops: I heard this song for the first time via a worst quality possible demo recording Gerard gave me. You couldn't hear a word of the lyrics, and the drums sounded like a million bananas being blended in a blender at once. It was enough though, to hook me the very first time. This is the song that has probably been the most exciting to watch evolve and take shape. It is an absolute ripper, and the best chorus Gez has written to date in my opinion.

Tie Me Down:
Gez: Dave convinced me to use this as a Statics song and I'm glad he did. The song is about the expectations we hold over our friends but more so just accepting that friends come and go.

Pat: I've heard people humming the chorus to this song, two weeks after they'd only heard it once. It's damn catchy.

A Victory for the Vicarious:
Pat: Victory is a punch in the face that just doesn't let up. The first time I heard it, it was in the form of the most horrible-quality demo I have ever heard, and it still rocked me to my jocks. It's definitely a band favourite, especially live.

Gez: An old band mate once explained to me what it meant to be 'vicarious' and I thought it summed up the music scene perfectly. This song is about the bands who attempt to buy their way to success.

Please Don't Tell:
Pat: Listening to this always reminds me of the day we spent recording this at End of the Road Studios in Montrose. We played basketball, and I sucked. A lot. That was the day that Gerard and Dave learnt just how horrible I am at anything that involves sports. But the song... is a good song.

Gez: This started as me wanting to be as cool as 'The Critics'. Didn't really end up that way (because no-one can really be as cool the critics!) but I'm pretty happy with the results all the same.

Blame:
Gez: This song took the longest of all to write. Probably the most rewarding song I've ever written in the sense that every time I came back to it I got more and more back.

Coops: Quite a hard one to get down on record, including the many different guitar tones and parts, drum and bass accents in the chorus and vocal challenges.
I was immediately attracted to the Hendrix style guitar riff that runs throughout this song. A big rocker!!

Lost At Sea:
Gez: A re-work from my hugely successful solo album (approaching double aluminum sales). Lost At Sea works in so many ways and I love what the guys brought to this recording. Sits nicely on the album at track 8 and should come up a treat live as well.

Pat: I love the look on people's faces when they hear this for the first time after only having heard the G-Pop version. They look surprised, excited, confused, included and violated, all at the same time.

Yeah, Baby. Love, Woman:
Pat: The chorus for this song went through multiple revisions over several weeks in the rehearsal room, but in the end, it always came back to four words: "Yeah, baby, love, and woman."

Gez: Writing simple music is such a challenge in the sense that you never know how far to take a simple idea. Sometimes you can think too much and end up with your head up your ass. Other times you just use the four most over-used words in rock music and scream it as loud as you can!

Why, You:
Dave: This song was the last to be written out of the ten tracks, so perhaps it's appropriate that it's the closing track for the album. The idea to add the female vocals was a real spare of the moment decision, but once we did it, it stuck. Coops sings the chorus in this one, and i love the extra dimension it adds. And I like that you can't tell the difference between his and Sarah's voices. I also like the fact we wrote a chorus using just one word..
YOU!

Coops: The most complex and interesting song on the album, and never far at all from my favourite track. It's one word choruses manages to say a lot more than it's one word suggests, and Gerard's delivery in the verses is nothing short of bloody good. I like the way each band member plays on this song more than any other song. Dave's drum track is outstanding, as is Pat's bass. I feel Gerard and I captured the eeriness of the verses and release of the bridge with our careful choice of guitar tones.

Guest vocalist Sarah Valentine did an amazing job in the chorus, having never heard the song before. As a band member, i am most proud of this song!
